107.3 WAAF-FM in Boston: The First Time

Category: Boston - If it Rocks...It's 107.3 WAAF!

I worked at WAAF twice. For those who don’t know, it is one of America’s first Rock stations, and was started by two guys who’d go on to bigger and better things. But, and nobody expected this, it is Boston’s longest-running Rock station now. I had a great time during my first tenure there.

This was the first time I was there 24 years ago. The demo that got me the job in Memphis.

The Stupid Kid Showed Up

Category: Memphis - WMFS - Solid Rock 92-9 MFS!

“For Marilyn Manson Tickets Part ‘Duh’!” All you need to know; “Well, that’s cuz you can’t set anybody on fire, in the studio.” That’s right! We literally set a kid on fire. However, we did have limits. We wouldn’t allow him to carve Marilyn Manson’s name into his skull with a broken beer bottle. He was game. We decided…that was too far. We used to be able to get them to do the *worst* things. All in the name of “the show.” And, they were more than willing to play along. These days, it’s a lot tougher to get people to humiliate themselves. Although, looking at reality TV, perhaps not. Again…this was ALL pre-Janet Jackson/9-11 and we got away with…well…Go ahead and listen.

You know anyone that talks to their dog and swears their dog understands them? What if their dog could talk back? Careful what you wish for. This piece was written and produced by my friend Chadd Pierce. I was mentoring him at the time, and this is what he comes up with….it’s on my first CD: “No Talent Ass Clown” I still use this bit as a holiday gift suggestion. It still makes me laugh.

Enjoy.
